The 2019 Colorado Hunting Season Has Arrived

It’s finally here! The 2019 Colorado hunting season for elk and mule deer has arrived. We will be spending September at Dark Timber Lodge, guiding hunters in game management units 61 and 62. To all of you hunting the archery or muzzleloader seasons in Colorado this year, we wish you a safe hunt, a ton of fun, and hopefully some meat in the freezer! Here at Dark Timber Outfitters, the horses are ready, the lodge is prepped, and we’re looking forward to seeing our first hunters of the year. If you’re hunting with us in 2019, we look forward to seeing you in Colorado!

Update on Hunting Conditions

This year is already quite a contrast from last year. In 2018 conditions were extremely dry. This year, there’s still snow remaining on Colorado’s high peaks. And the high country is still very green. There’s no shortage of food or water for our deer and elk. After receiving a healthy snowpack followed by lots of spring moisture, our herds should be in excellent shape going into the fall season.Hunters often ask how a year like this with unusual moisture will affect the hunting. In our opinion, it won’t change things much. This year, hunters might expect animals to be a little more spread out, or at least less reliant on isolated water sources. However, it certainly won’t impact the timing of the rut. The elk rut is triggered by shortening daylight hours, despite what the weather may be doing. No matter what the weather delivers this fall, we’ll have fun and make the most of it! The success of a hunt is more often determined by attitude and persistence. We’re looking forward to being out in the field with many of you this season.
